Tutorial: Easy Giraffe Animal Softie

8 Jan

I am starting to get the hang of this blogging thing! I am really quite enjoying sharing how I make things to the world! If you have any questions about anything I do please ask me!

Supplies needed:

  • Fabric
  • Pattern
  • Grosgrain ribbon
  • Polyfil
  • Sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Needle and coordinating thread

The first thing you need to do is draw your pattern, I just free-handed a giraffe shape on a piece of cardboard. Cut out your pattern and select your fabric.

Next, place two pieces of fabric with right sides facing each other. Trace your pattern onto the wrong side of the fabric.

Cut you pattern piece out adding 1/4″ around. (**Do not cut out on your traced line!!! You need this line!!)

Prepare your ribbon pieces, cut 6 or 7 2″ pieces of grosgrain ribbon. Using a liter, burn both edges lightly to prevent fraying. Cut out on longer piece for the tail. I chose to make my tail piece 4″. You can really cut these however  long you would like.

Next you are going to pin your ribbon pieces to your giraffe. To do this, line up your ribbon where you would like it but with the ribbon going inwards, not pointing out. See picture.

Pin the rest of your giraffe.

To sew, change your stitch length to about 1.8. This will allow for a tighter stitch which will be more secure for the softie! Line your needle up with your pattern line and sew. Start sewing near the top of the right leg, allowing for a 2.5″ opening on the underside of the giraffe.  Be sure to back stitch when you start sewing and back stitch over every ribbon as well.  Remove the pins as you go.

Sew all the way around the giraffe, stopping just at the top of the left leg leaving an opening for turning.

Clip your corners and your curves.

Clip by your starting and ending point of your opening as well.

Turn the giraffe right side out. Use something small to help push out the little pieces. A chopstick works well for this.

Stuff the giraffe with some polyfill. I just used some stuffing from a pillow. Start with the head and neck, then do the legs, then fill the rest of the body until it is nice and stuffed!

Get a needle and coordinating thread and hand stitch your giraffe shut.

To hide your end strings, after you finish off your hand stitching, push your needle into the giraffe and come out the other side, pull tight and clip the thread very close to the fabric.  Once it is cut, it will automatically go back inside the giraffe hiding your thread.Clip by your starting and ending point of your opening as well.

And you are DONE!! Show off your completed animal to your friends and family!!!!
